What is RSS?
In basic terms RSS is a website URL that contains information about a website. This information is usually a list of news related items and can be presented in the form of text, posts, music, video, and more. By itself, an RSS feed is just code generated by a website. This is why you need a Feed Reader or “Aggregator” to read it. (Learn More)
What is a Feed Reader / Aggregator?
A Feed Reader can be a web or desktop application and it allows you to read RSS and many other formats. Simply “paste” or add an RSS Feed website URL into the application and it will display and monitor news from that particular website feed. This is a “hub” for all of your feed subscriptions. Feed Readers will usually notify you of new posts or new content so you don’t have to manually go to website to see if they have updated news. This is especially helpful for making your time spent on the web more efficient. (An example of a free web based news reader is Google Reader) (Learn More)
So why do I need an RSS Feed again?
If you don’t plan on using an RSS Feed Reader regularly and prefer visiting websites by manually typing in the web address or using bookmarks, you probably won’t need it. This is just provided as a convenience for those who monitor multiple websites on a daily/weekly basis.
