"By constantly having their energy consumption displayed on the GreenTouchscreen®, our students are developing a new awareness of how their habits impact the environment. It also invokes a sense of energy competitiveness between the students that live there. Having the website available to the rest of the campus (and the world) sends a message of 'we care' in the sense of environmental stewardship." Completion Date: April 2007
 View Press Release

Summary:
Gaia Napa Valley Hotel & Spa needed a unique way to show off their eco-friendly facility while educating and impressing users. With GreenTouchscreen® they were able to do that and much more. By interactively displaying the hotel’s green features and live energy data, Gaia Napa Valley was able to create a unique and impressive system that educates users about their eco-friendly facility and incorporates helpful visitor information.

The Problem Defined (Business Situation):
The Gaia Napa Valley Hotel & Spa is the first Gold LEED® Certified hotel. Gaia, meaning “Mother Earth” in Greek, is a newly developed hotel chain dedicated to eco-friendly practices and luxury. Everything from carpet made from recycled materials, to renewable energy, to chemical free landscaping, Gaia Napa Valley has strived to become an example for hotels and eco-friendly buildings everywhere.

The only thing missing from the hotel was an easy way to show guests their many hidden “green” features and to educate them about being eco-friendly. Gaia Napa Valley wanted an innovative solution customized to reflect the image and views of Gaia.

Solution Expectations (Major Goals):
Provide quick, inherent display of current electricity, water, CO2 situation
Provide easy to use hotel directory
Educate public about the hotel
Impress users

The solution:
In Gaia’s search for that perfect solution, they discovered GreenTouchscreen®, a product of Quality Attributes Software. With the large variety of features and the ability to completely customize their solution, Gaia was able to create an interactive kiosk that perfectly fit their needs. The kiosk was designed to give the guests an inspiring experience of nature. It’s artistic “earthy” feel reflects the ambience of the hotel and spa. At the same time the kiosk provides several “green” educational features such as energy monitoring graphs, easy to understand equivalents, a PV system animation and Gaia’s LEED® Checklist displaying each credit the building earned to become Gold LEED® Certified. In addition to the educational features of the kiosk, is a building directory of their 133 room, four acre facility, hotel and conference facilities information, and an event calendar.

Gaia Napa Valley took their GreenTouchscreen® one step further by displaying real-time electricity, water and CO2 gauges on monitors behind the front desk and in every guest room with a click of a button on the television remote. With the flexibility of QAS and GreenTouchscreen® Gaia was able to truly make the solution their own.

Solution Benefits:
One of the obvious benefits Gaia Napa Valley has gained from their new GreenTouchscreen® is that they can effortlessly educate visitors about their greening efforts. This is accomplished through the impressive interactive touchscreen kiosk, real-time gauges displayed in the lobby, and guest access to live data in every room. By educating and impressing visitors with their GreenTouchscreen® it makes people more aware of their impact on the environment and motivates them to do their part in conserving the environment. Gaia’s GreenTouchscreen® also helps visitors find their way around the facility and discover all the amenities they hotel has to offer.
