"By constantly having their energy consumption displayed on the GreenTouchscreen®, our students are developing a new awareness of how their habits impact the environment. It also invokes a sense of energy competitiveness between the students that live there. Having the website available to the rest of the campus (and the world) sends a message of 'we care' in the sense of environmental stewardship." Green?

WHAT IS GREEN?

Green buildings have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability by meeting higher performance standards in environmental responsibility and energy efficiency. They are built to have minimal environmental impact and be energy efficient, saving money and the environment.

Even though renewable energy is a rapidly growing trend, the green industry still has three obstacles to overcome:

  • Higher Initial Investment
  • Lack of Education
  • Lack of Awareness

Several people are scared off by the higher initial costs for installing energy efficient systems and materials. The truth is, a return on investment will be realized through lower operational costs.

GreenTouchscreen® addresses the other two obstacles by providing a web based solution educating the public about green buildings and sustainability. Flash system animations bring the building to life and make the invisible workings of the building observable, teachable and engaging. Real-time graphs and gauges compare the energy savings of the energy efficient building to a “normal,” non-efficient building.

HOW IS GREENTOUCHSCREEN® GREEN?

We use a Dell PowerEdge Energy Smart Server, but what makes the server so energy efficient?

  • Intel Xeon low Voltage Processors designed to increase performance per watt
  • “Low-Flow” Fan Technology controls fan speed based on thermal requirements of the system
  • High Efficiency Power Supplies draw significantly less energy, helping to maintain cooler internal temperatures

We also use Energy Star computer hardware wherever possible, reflecting our commitment to the environment. Most importantly, however, we provide invaluable education about the green industry to our users.
