Award Winning US Navy Building Increases Awareness of Its Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
Port Hueneme, CA - The Navy’s Energy and Sustainable Design Demonstration Facility (also known as building 850), located at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) in Port Hueneme, California has installed a GreenTouchscreen® kiosk to increase awareness of the latest energy efficient technologies it is using.
The innovative GreenTouchscreen® kiosk creatively displays detailed information about the various technologies used in the building, which have earned several awards and certification including the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council.
Along with information about NBVC and energy saving tips, the GreenTouchscreen® kiosk also serves as an educational tool that helps explain all of the hidden aspects of the building that might otherwise go unnoticed. The kiosk includes easy to understand animations, real time data graphs and detailed explanations about the building’s extensive sustainable technologies such as natural daylighting, landscaping and irrigation, and solar energy systems.
The building is one of the U.S. Navy’s two national “Energy Showcase” facilities designed to demonstrate applications of the latest concepts in energy efficient and sustainable facility design, construction and operation. The project serves not only as a functioning green building but also as a living laboratory and educational tool for emerging sustainable design and technologies, which made the need to educate through an interactive tool a must.
“Building 850 will be an environmental classroom promoting energy-efficient and sustainable technologies for the government as well as outside communities, with the hope of influencing future building designs and sustaining our precious natural resources,” stated Richard Spiessl, a member of the NBVC Public Works Department.
