"By constantly having their energy consumption displayed on the GreenTouchscreen®, our students are developing a new awareness of how their habits impact the environment. It also invokes a sense of energy competitiveness between the students that live there. Having the website available to the rest of the campus (and the world) sends a message of 'we care' in the sense of environmental stewardship." NY State’s First “Green” Certified Library Educates Visitors with GreenTouchscreen

Clifton Park, NY – Located in the atrium entrance of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public library, in Clifton Park, NY, is the newly showcased GreenTouchscreen® kiosk. This 42 inch display attracts visitors of all ages with its innovative graphics and fascinating facts. The page turning effects makes learning fun and navigation easy. An estimated $66,000 is saved annually due to the library’s high efficient systems and energy saving efforts. The daylighting system saves an average of three dollars an hour alone, totaling $11,000 annually. The library’s GreenTouchscreen® automates this system with a daylight simulation showing the percentage of sunlight and indoor light being used throughout the day.

GreenTouchscreen® makes the invisible flows of electricity and CO2 observable, teachable, and engaging to users with interactive graphs illustrating the library’s usage compared to a typical building’s. Since opening, in October, 2006, the library has saved 22 mWh of electricity.

Energy efficiency is not the only thing that the library’s GreenTouchscreen® displays. A calendar of events informs the public of the many fun and educational classes and events going on at the library. Users may also learn more about their community’s learning center with facts about its history, construction and “green” efforts.

“We are proud of this building as a leading-edge, environmentally-advanced facility,” said Josephine Piracci, Director of Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library.

Being the first “green” certified library in New York State, Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library has become a leader in sustainability and a paradigm for libraries and buildings everywhere.
