"By constantly having their energy consumption displayed on the GreenTouchscreen®, our students are developing a new awareness of how their habits impact the environment. It also invokes a sense of energy competitiveness between the students that live there. Having the website available to the rest of the campus (and the world) sends a message of 'we care' in the sense of environmental stewardship." Grand Opening of Timberglen Branch Library Features GreenTouchscreen Kiosk

Dallas, TX - The city’s newest library held its grand opening on Saturday February 24th, 2007 presenting one of the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly buildings in Dallas. Timberglen Branch Library, an 18,000 square-foot facility, was awarded a Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Contributing to this LEED® rating is the GreenTouchscreen® kiosk featured in the main lobby of the library.

Visitors will learn about the many “green” features of the library with the interactive GreenTouchscreen® kiosk. Its user-friendly graphics create an inviting interface enhancing the educational experience for all ages. Electricity and water usage is graphically illustrated to show historical and real-time usage. The interactive LEED® Checklist displays what Timberglen has done to obtain their Silver certification using detailed descriptions of each credit.

“The opening was a big success,” said Tim Kraft, PSA-Dewberry Senior Project Manager, “The kiosk fascinated people of all ages and was highly promoted by featured speakers.”

Timberglen Branch Library is among the many Silver LEED® certified buildings in Dallas such as the Jack Evans Police Headquarters, Dallas Fire Station #38, the McCommas ECO Training Center, the Hensley Field Operation Center, and Walnut Hill Branch Library just to name a few. Southern Methodist University’s Embrey building located in Dallas, which received a Gold LEED® rating, also features a GreenTouchscreen® to engage and educate students.

Dedication to energy conservation has prompted the city to implement renewable energy into many facilities. The city decreed in 2003 that all new facilities over 10,000 square-feet must attain LEED®’s Silver certification or better. Spreading to more than just buildings, nearly half the street lights throughout Dallas (34,000) will soon be lit by renewable “green power”.
