Laboratory building uses kiosk to engage students
Dallas, Texas - When the ribbon was cut to open the J. Lindsay Embrey Engineering Building, it became not only the greenest building on the Southern Methodist University campus but also one of the first academic buildings in the country to be designed and constructed to LEED® Gold standards.
The spectacular 50,000 plus square foot facility is a living laboratory for students and faculty as well as a showpiece for design and construction in the region. As a laboratory, the building actively seeks to engage students on a day to day basis. One of the most apparent ways this is being done is through the interactive GreenTouchscreen® kiosk located in the first floor hallway.
The kiosk, displayed on a 40 inch wall-mounted LCD touchscreen, educates students about the sustainable features of the building, the LEED® program and the SMU Engineering department. An interactive green features map and LEED® checklist allow users to visually see the (often otherwise hidden) unique aspects that make the Embrey building so special.
The GreenTouchscreen® will continue to engage students, both at the kiosk in the building and online, by including four informational features. The interactive campus directory and building directory allow users to select one of the four floors of the building to zoom in and see that floor. Selecting a room highlights that room and displays information relating to it. To make finding a room or individual easy, the directory can be searched by room number or occupant name. The schedule of events allows users to get information on events and classes going on in the building, while the calendar allows users to discover what campus events going on and to search for an event by event name, room number, or department.
The kiosk also includes a donor recognition section, Spanish translation and an eye catching screensaver.
